Lampard Shines As City Hit Seven

Lampard and Dzeko both scored twice as City sailed into the Fourth Round with a crushing 7-0 demolition of Sheffield Wednesday. City struggled to break down the Campionship side in the first half but then produced a blistering spell of four goals in 13 minutes immediately after the break.

Willy Caballero replaced Joe Hart in goal to make his first appearance since the Community Shield while Lampard’s emotional point-saving goal against Chelsea on Sunday earned him a second City start.

City’s first shot did not arrive until the 16th minute, Sagna cutting the ball back for Milner, whose effort lacked the pace to beat Chris Kirkland.

Mangala was making his second successive start and almost scored a stunning first goal for City in the 19th minute. The big defender met Aleksandar Kolarov’s corner perfectly with a hooked volley but the ball smacked against the near post.

Pellegrini resisted the temptation to change things at the break and the decision almost immediately paid dividends.

Lampard broke the deadlock in the 47th minute, tapping in a low cross from Milner at the near post to score his second goal in two games following Sunday's equaliser against his former club Chelsea.

Dzeko turned in a Navas cross in the 53rd minute and Navas made it 3-0 with a run and fierce shot a minute later.

Yaya Toure added a fourth from the penalty spot on the hour after Kamil Zayatte had been sent off for tripping Lampard, before late goals from Dzeko, substitute Jose Pozo who was making his debut and Lampard completed the rout.

A young supporter ran onto the pitch during the match to take a snap with the ex-England star, who put a welcoming arm around him and stopped for a picture before offering a departing a hug.

City will now take on Newcastle United at Eastlands in the Fourth round.
