Belief is the watchword for Blues

Belief is the key word for Andy Awford as he calls on Pompey's players and fans to keep the faith that recent encouraging draws will turn into victories.

Speaking after the Blues had been pegged back to draw with Burton, he told The News: ‘We wanted to control the game and we did for large periods, We played with a lot of attacking players on the pitch as well, which was important, and felt we deserved to win again.

‘Unfortunately we haven’t, but we have got to keep believing the draws will turn into wins. It was a good team performance and if we keep playing at those levels I am sure more points will start to come and we can start to climb the table.

‘Jed’s goal gave everybody a lift, the crowd, the players, everyone got a shot of confidence from that and you could see that. A second goal would have really put it to bed and killed the game off.

‘We didn’t manage to do it, that is why the lads are frustrated but it’s another good performance against a team who will be right up there at the end of the season.

‘There was a spell for about 15 minutes where we have probably sat a little bit deep while Burton had a bit of ball and didn’t really hurt us.

‘But overall we were pleased with the defensive shape and the solidity and protection to the back four and I thought it was another good performance.

‘We have done the hard work and that is the disappointing thing. There was good character as well once they scored. We looked the stronger team at the end and I thought maybe we could go on and nick it.

‘There were a couple of chances which didn’t go our way and there was a handball in the penalty box. But no excuses, let’s move on to Southend now. That was a good performance again and we keep on believing.’
