Pompey fans urged to make different sort of noise

Pompey fans have been making plenty of noise at Fratton Park this season - but it hasn't all been quite designed to roar encouragement to the team.

The boos have rung out on several occasions as supporters have shown their frustration at some poor performances from the Blues in front of their own fans.

But now Fratton fans are being urged to put their vocal chords to more positive use by fan Olly Birch, who says the home roar can be a big weapon for Pompey.

He told The News: ‘There are six matches in February against opposition around us and four of those are at Fratton. We got the Wall of Noise going for the visit of Hartlepool last season after Awford had taken over as caretaker boss the previous match and it gave us that momentum to stay up.

‘These days the atmosphere has definitely dropped. When the opposition score we used to start singing, now we either boo or it goes silent. I get annoyed with people abusing our own players, while opposition fans come for a day out and have a right laugh. We need to make it more intimidating to opposition players.

‘Some of our younger players are scared stiff of getting booed if they make one wrong pass. We don’t intimidate the opposition, we intimidate our own team. One morning I had a bit of a Twitter rant and mentioned I was going to sing "Blue Army” for the first 15 minutes at least against Hartlepool and asked if anyone wanted to join me.

‘It got a fair bit of response and retweets and since I have decided to make it into a bit of an event. Everyone seems keen and all the message boards are on board. It has got to be better than just accepting the atmosphere, which has been flat recently.

‘Let us all do something about it. If you want to join in, join in. Hopefully, for the first 15 minutes at least, we can have plenty of people singing.'
