For the first time since Stuart Houston spent £2.5m to bring Mike Shron to Loftus Road Rangers went out in November 2007 and picked up the division’s outstanding player in his position. Thankfully Akos Buzsaky is certainly no Mike Sheron.
The Hungarian has eleven caps and one goal against Greece for his country and is the kind of player that makes the high price of tickets in this country worth every penny. A scorer a spectacular goals and a really entertaining attacking midfielder – it’ hard to be too complimentary about Akos because he’s just the sort of player you want to see playing for your team. That Rangers were able to get him for just £500k is incredible.
Buzsaky started his career in Budapest with MTK Hungaria and won the country’s Young Player of the Year award in 2003 but quickly packed his bags and headed abroad when Jose Mourinho paid £400k to take him to Porto. Mourinho won the Champions League during his time in Portugal of course but Buzsaky only made four appearances for the first team and in 2004 he moved to England to try his luck with Plymouth Argyle in a £225k deal. Three years at Home Park left a real impression on the fans in the West Country and he was a fan’s favourite by the time he moved to QPR in November 2007.
There had been frequent talk of Buzsaky feeling homesick in Plymouth and although he was joined for 07/08 by countrymen Peter Halmosi and Krisztian Timar it was hoped that he’d feel much more at home in the bright lights of London. He settled into life in W12 immediately with a long range goal at the Loft End in a home defeat by Coventry a terrific way to introduce himself to the QPR fans. He bagged a brace in a 2-2 draw at Scunthorpe and repeated the trick against Colchester United ten days later – eventually finishing as QPR’s top scorer with ten goals.
He missed the final six weeks of the season with an ankle injury picked up on international duty and in June 08 the dreadful news that the injury would require surgery was broken on the club’s official website. Akos consequently missed the first two months of 2008/09 and although he did briefly make it back, and scored against Nottingham Forest at Loftus Road, he subseuently ripped knee ligaments when he caught his studs in the turf at Old Trafford in the League Cup in November ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
