Youngsters join Pompey as Cook issues appeal

Another crop of would-be Pompey stars have signed for the club as first year apprentices.

The eight will take heart from the way the likes of Adam Webster and Conor Chaplin have forced their way from that same level to the first team in recent years.

The new boys are: Jez Bedford, Harvey Bradbury, Nick Hall, Kyle McDowell, Ousman Saidy, Tommy Scutt, Eddie Wakley and Theo Widdrington — all aged 16. All have signed two-year contracts.

Academy manager Mark Kelly told the club website: 'It was a happy and exciting day for all of the boys and their families. Some of them have been with us for quite a few years, so it’s nice to see them make the next step.

'They’re fully aware of the challenge that lies ahead as they look to become young professionals at this club. It’s going to require two years of hard work from them, but I know that’s something they’re all prepared for.'

Meanwhile, with Saturday's deadline for early-bird season ticket prices looming, manager Paul Cook has appealed to fans to snap them up and show their backing for the team. The club have already sold 9,000 seats.

Cook told the website: 'Pompey fans are renowned for their passion and loyalty and I'd like to thank those who've already bought a season ticket, as well encourage anyone else who has still to make their mind up to make the commitment.

'There are some great deals on offer to early bird customers, making watching football at Fratton Park very affordable next season. And I can promise fans that the lads and my management team will be doing our level best to make next season a special one.'
