Numbers game is a curious one for Pompey

Pompey fans are busy predicting how relevant the club's squad numbers for the new season will be once Paul Cook sends out his starting XI on day one.

If his numbers mean anything, Paul Jones will be in goal, Enda Stevens, Paul Robinson, Adam Webster and Christian Burgess will appear at the back, Michael Doyle, Adam McGurk and Gary Roberts will be in midfield and Matt Tubbs will be in front.

The absence of a No2 and a No10 suggests Cook has more first-teamers to bring in.

The likes of Kai Naismith, Adam Barton, Jac Whatmough and Jayden Stockley are all outside the first 11 numbers, but that will mean little if they get in the side and prove their worth.

Squad numbers below: 1 Paul Jones 3 Enda Stevens 4 Adam Webster 5 Paul Robinson 6 Christian Burgess 7 Adam McGurk 8 Michael Doyle 9 Matt Tubbs 11 Gary Roberts 14 Kal Naismith 15 Adam Barton 16 Jack Whatmough 17 Jayden Stockley 18 Ben Tollitt 19 Conor Chaplin 21 James Dunne 23 Kyle Bennett 25 Nigel Atangana 26 Gareth Evans 29 Danny Hollands 33 Ben Close 38 Brandon Haunstrup

Meanwhile, Pompey will have an open training session at Fratton next Tuesday, with gates opening at 1.30 and training at 2 for those who want to watch. It will go some way to making up for the club not having played any friendlies at Fratton.
