Goalkeeper Aaron McCarey could be pitched straight into the Pompey team at Bristol Rovers on Saturday after joining on loan from Wolves to cover a crisis between the posts.
With Paul Jones struggling with a knee injury and Brian Murphy battling a groin problem, Paul Cook acted quickly to get experienced cover in.
It looked like Darryl Flahavan - brother of tragic Pompey keeper Aaron - could be the man to solve the crisis but Cook has instead recruited the Wolves man.
McCarey is a former Republic of Ireland under-21 international who came through the Wolves’ academy and has played seven times for the Molineux club's first team
He has also had spells at Walsall and York.
Earlier this year McCarey was suspended for four months by the FA for failing an out-of-competition drug test. McCarey maintained he was unaware of how the non-performing enhancing substance entered his system.
McCarey tweeted that he was happy to have joined Pompey, having heard good things about the club from his Molineux team-mate Jed Wallace.
