Adam McGurk hopes Pompey's defeat at Notts County proves a kick up the backside.
It was the Blues' first league loss on the road and saw them slip to third in the table.
McGurk, just back in the side after injury, told the club website: 'It was frustrating to get the early goal and then concede so soon afterwards. We have to do better than that as a team if we want to do well in this league this season.
'Hopefully it’s a kick up the backside for us and that’s something we can learn from. We’ve conceded two sloppy goals and we need to demand more from ourselves. We have to be better. But we played well at times — especially in the first half — so we have to take the result on the chin and move on.
'Winning the league last season (with Burton), I know what’s expected and what you need to do to have success. I don’t think you can doubt the quality in our side, but we can be better in the final third and there are errors that can be cut out.'
Boss Paul Cook gave an honest appraisal after the defeat although did say Pompey had played worse and won this season.
He told the website: 'Success doesn’t come in a day or a week — there needs to be a lot of hard work and there will be mistakes. We certainly made some of those and we need to learn from them.'
