Pompey welcome two and bid farewell to three

Never mind one in, one out - it was two in, three out for Pompey on deadline day.

Striker Eoin Doyle was the big move, joining on loan from Preston. Right-back Aaron Simpson also joined, while Adam Buxton, Ben Close and - to the surprise of many - Michael Smith went in the other direction.

Doyle, 28, has signed for the remainder of the season and Paul Cook told the Pompey website: 'Having worked with Eoin previously at two clubs, I am delighted with this signing. He knows what I want as a manager and I know that I can rely on him to give 100 per cent on the pitch.'

Right-back Simpson arrives on loan from Wolves for the rest of the season. The 19-year-old has played in four EFL Trophy matches for them. He joined Wolves from Maidstone two years ago.

Pompey and Buxton mutually agreed to cancel the defender’s contract. The 24-year-old full-back made four appearances for the Blues.

Close has joined National League premier division side Eastleigh on loan for the rest of the season. The 20-year-old midfielder has made four Pompey appearances for Pompey this season.

Last but not least, Smith has gone to League One Northampton on loan, also for the rest of the 16-17 campaign. The 25-year-old striker has scored 10 goals in 37 appearances since arriving at Fratton Park a year ago but has struggled for form of late.
