Good time to be a Pompey fan - but not for all, it seems

It’s not a bad time to be a Pompey fan, is it?

Promoted after a great run of form, selling out of tickets at home and away, and we're all going on a League One tour.

But it’s not enough for some.

Will Rooney’s piece on The News website featuring Paul Cook’s reaction to the draw with Plymouth had a frankly-astonishing set of reader comments (yes, I know I should avoid them but sometimes I can’t resist), many of whom were saying Cook had been making the same mistakes for two years and should be replaced. I ask you.

Similarly, there are those reacting to the potential Eisner takeover by insisting it must happen ASAP because what the club have done in the past four seasons ‘is not exactly success, is it?’

I accept Pompey should have got out of League Two sooner, though there are plenty of teams — Plymouth (six seasons) and Bradford (seven) among them — who have stayed in the fourth tier much longer.

But what the fan-owned Pompey have achieved since April 2013 is surely about much more than league position. Can people not ‘feel’ the difference?

At times, life in League Two has been frustrating. But for those of us who’d watch Pompey at this level as readily as in the Premier League, it’s not been the end of the world. At least we’ve had plenty of goals and victories to enjoy.

Today’s society is an impatient one, and today’s football fans are the same. That impatience may be the thing that sees this takeover go through - though I have been heartened to hear about the sheer volume of PST members and shareholders who DO NOT want to give up fan ownership of the club.

But if the aforementioned impatience for success wins the day for the takeover, I just hope its backers don’t regret it later.
