For a new season, I am getting a new one of my unscientific Pompey fans’ polls under way. And it is a follow-up to the ‘favourite games’ vote I oversaw last season.
Back then, in an effort to avoid some obvious nominations, I banned readers from going for any Wembley appearance, any single game that guaranteed promotion, a title or an escape from relegation, or the AC Milan game.
This time, it’s all about those very matches.
I want to know your favourite big Pompey occasion and it has to fit into one of the above categories.
I began this poll a couple of weeks ago in my programme column and have had a lot of responses already.
Without wishing to influence the outcome, I can say several things about how the voting is going.
Two particular games are proving more popular than all the others put together; no-one has yet voted for a pre-1980 game; no-one’s mentioned the promotion or title clinchers from 1983 and one of our Wembley visits has yet to earn a vote.
I’ll keep the voting open until the end of September and publish a top 10 countdown in a column or two after that.
Of course, if there’s anyone out there who was at Wembley in 1929, 1934, 1939 or 1942, I’d love to hear from you. Those visits are every bit as eligible for votes.
Those voting include former Pompey physio Neil Sillett, who has been recalling one of his favourite days during his Fratton spell.
So... join in the fun by emailing stevebonepfc@googlemail.com or tweeting @stevebone1 with your top big game — and be happy we have so many to choose from.
