I’ve had an interesting start to my search for 100 Pompey players who you lot rate as your favourites of all-time.
This is my latest unofficial readers’ vote which I hope will result in a Top 100 countdown of your Blues favourites.
The key word here is favourite — not best. The two may be the same for some fans, but it is specifically the player who has given you most enjoyment that I’m looking for you to name.
Early nominations include one for a man who was in the PFC headlines last week — Mark Hateley, who is among the latest group inducted into the club’s hall of fame.
Hateley, one of those rare players to make a massive impression on Pompey fans despite being a Blue for just one season, has had a vote from Paul Hoare.
He said: ‘I can remember thinking he was a player always destined for greater things.
‘His two hat-tricks in one week against Cambridge and Grimsby will always be remembered.’
These polls that I do, perhaps because of the average age of my reader(s), generally produce answers from the 1980s onwards — but I’m pleased to report that people’s favourite players go back to a more distant era.
Among those to get mentions so far are Jimmy Dickinson and Ray Hiron.
Roger Endacott said of Hiron: ‘I swear he claimed a goal from a thunderbolt that flicked his ear.’
David James and Pedro Mendes, who were on opposing sides at Fratton Park 12 years ago this very day, are also among those voted for.
Your turn now... tweet @stevebone1 or email stevebonepfc@googlemail.com naming your favourite PFC player and saying why.
