Pompey pop Cork

It wasn't so much a game of two halves as Pompey opened pre-season by popping Cork, but it was a game of two Pompey teams.

Kenny Jackett gave two different line-ups 45 minutes each and it was a comfortable 4-1 over the Irish hosts that was the result.

Christian Burgess, Jamal Lowe and Conor Chaplin (2) were the scorers.

New recruits Craig MacGillivray, Lee Brown, Tom Naylor and Ronan Curtis started, with Louis Dennis playing in the second period.

Brett Pitman and Danny Rose were among those to show up well for Pompey before Burgess headed in the opener.

Pitman set up Lowe for number two and that was how it stayed til the break.

The second half team had Jack Whatmough as skipper and academy pair Freddie Read and Joe Dandy plus first-year professionals Matt Casey and Dan Smith all got game time.

Josh O’Hanlon pulled one back but Chaplin soon made it 3-1 after a neat one two with OIi Hawkins.

Fifteen minutes from the end Chaplin added his second from 25 yards out and all in all it was a workout that must have pleased Jackett and his staff.

Pompey: MacGillivray (McGee 46); Thompson (Dandy 46), Burgess (Casey 46), Clarke (Whatmough 46), Brown (Haunstrup 46); Naylor (May 46), Rose (Read 46); Evans (Smith 46), Lowe (Chaplin 46), Curtis (Dennis 46); Pitman (c) (Hawkins 46).
