Pompey prove they are Wheeler dealers

It was a transfer that did not seem to be on many Pompey radars - if any - until it was about to happen. And Pompey's bosses are clearly delighted to have worked away behnid the scenes to secure the services of winger David Wheeler.

He has arrived on a season-long loan from QPR, who he joined after an eye-catching spell at Exeter, for whom he did well against Pompey on more than one occasion.

The 27-year-old is set to go straight into the side for the trip to Blackpool on Saturday and told the Pompey website: 'I didn’t play too many games last season, so I wanted to get back into the swing of things and experience competitive football again. It was looking likely for the past six weeks or so that a loan move was a possibility and coming to Pompey was a no-brainer.

'That’s because of the size of the club and the support they get. The prestige is just so high and that’s why it wasn’t a particularly difficult decision. It’s good that it’s not a short-term thing because I can really feel part of the squad and part of the push for promotion.

'Coming in off the line, getting in at the back post and anticipating where the ball is going to land are my best assets. If the opportunity arises I do my best to score goals, but it’s also about laying chances on for other players when it’s the right time.

'I’ve played in different ways — more as a forward, as a conventional wide midfielder and even up front on my own.'
