Wheeler off mark as Pompey ease past Gills in trophy

It might not be a top priority for many Pompey fans, but Kenny Jackett would still have been delighted with a 4-0 win over Gillingham in the Checkatrade Trophy in front of a sparse Fratton Park crowd.

Pompey made 10 changes from the line-up that beat Plymouth on Saturday and Andre Green was given a first Blues start.

Pompey had to be patient but it was not undeserved when Matt Clarked nodded in an Adam May corner three minutes before the break.

A minute later Nathan Thompson crossed for Ben Close to make it 2-0.

Brett Pitman got the third from the spot on 55 minutes after Green was fouled in the box.

Lee Mason came on for his Blues bow and was involved in the fourth and final goal in the dying moments, seeing his shot beaten out to David Wheeler to slot in.

Pompey: McGee; N Thompson, Burgess, Clarke, Brown; Close, Rose; Wheeler, May (Mason 62), Green; Pitman. Subs not used: MacGillivray, Brown, Naylor, B Thompson, Evans, Lowe.

Referee: Alan Young

Attendance: 2,011 (69 away fans)
