Pompey's Wembley final likely to get new date - and unlikely to be scrubbed

Pompey will get the chance to become the first team to win the EFL Trophy twice in a row.

Fears their trophy final clash with Salford at Wembley will be written off seem unfounde if reports that emerged on Tuesday are to be believed.

The game at present is scheduled to be played on April 5 - two days after the current suspension of senior football is due to end. But the chances of football resumnig that soon seem slim, at best.

The News reported on Tuesday that it understood 'the Football League’s preference and expectation is for a rescheduled final to be played when games eventually resume, in line with the overwhelming consensus the season must be seen to a conclusion among the football family'.

The EFL board are due to meet again this week to look at all issues arising from the coronvirus outbreak and spread.

Pompey have sold around 50,000 tickets for the Wembley final, an occasion that last year saw them beat Sunerland on penalties.
