Middlesbrough player ratings vs Bristol City

Middlesbrough recorded a hard-fought 1-0 victory against Bristol City at Ashton Gate.

It was the Teessiders who arguably had the better of the first period with Chuba Akpom having the only real chance of the game.

The second half showed was a steady improvement as Boro built the momentum before George Saville capitalised on a defensive error.

Barring a worrying penalty appeal from the hosts, Middlesbrough saw out the game for a valuable three points.

Here are our Bonkers For Boro player ratings.

Marcus Bettinelli -6

A relatively quiet night, but he won't mind. Back-to-back clean sheets is exactly what he needs to build his confidence after a shaky start to the season.

Djed Spence -7

Showed good attacking intent down the right but lacked the quality on the ball to carve out any clear chances.

Anfernee Dijksteel -7

Another example of why he's arguably been Middlesbrough's best so far this term. Solid, assured and comfortable on the ball - everything that Neil Warnock is looking for.

Dael Fry -7

It's pleasing to see Fry get back to being the player that we know he can be. A dominant figure in defence and comfortable on the ball.

Paddy McNair -7

A player who is really thriving in this new role. As well as being solid in defence his passing ability and delivery from set pieces caused plenty of problems for the hosts.

Marvin Johnson -5

Genuinely forgot he was playing in the first period as he put in a somewhat anonymous display.

Jonny Howson -7

Led Middlesbrough's midfield in a dominant display. A box-to-box display in the truest sense of the word as his relentless work ethic showed why he's such a reliable part of the team.

Sam Morsy -7

Another display that shows why Middlesbrough were so keen to sign him. Dominant and combative, but also showed decent quality on the ball.

George Saville -8

Seems to have really found his feet alongside Morsy and Howson in midfield. Tasked with playing box-to-box, Saville put in the sort of disciplined display that Warnock will have wanted.

Got his rewards for some tireless pressing as he got himself on the scoresheet.

Patrick Roberts -7

While you could see that he wasn't fully fit, there was no doubting the quality that he has. Some excellent dribbles put Bristol City under pressure and needed just a little bit more luck to tee Akpom up with a genuine goalscoring chance or two.

Chuba Akpom -6

A frustrating night for the striker. Missed a good opportunity in the first half and was generally marked out of the game as Middlesbrough's lone striker. Looks much more competent in a two.

That said he did work tirelessly and won some decent free-kick for his team.

Substitutes

Marcus Tavernier -5

Put in a good shift for the team and had an effort go just wide in the closing stages.

Marcus Browne -5

Worked hard but did little to truly impact the game.

Nathan Wood-N/A

Not on the field long enough to be rated.
