Cup games fine by Pompey but league fixtures pile up

The league fixtures are piling up for Pompey - but Kenny Jackett is happy to have a couple of cup ties to get the Blues back in action after a three-week break.

Pompey last played on December 18 - when they won 2-0 at Hull - and returning with an FA Cup visit to Bristol City and an EFL Trophy tussle with Peterborough perhaps take the pressure off the need to be back and firing on all cylinders straight away.

Jackett told the Pompey website: 'It was really frustrating to have the Accrington match off because we were all clear in terms of Covid and training hard, but it couldn’t be helped.

'You looked at the weather in that area of the country and there were problems, so it’s one of those things and we’ll now have to go there on a Tuesday night. It means the games will be coming thick and fast — starting this weekend — but we’re looking forward to playing again.

'They’ve trained very well and we’ve had to make sure we keep ticking over — the attitude has been good and that should be reflected in the games coming up.

'Bristol City are an excellent side and have made a positive start to the season, so we’re looking forward to it. It’s good to have a couple of cup ties to get us going again, although we won’t underestimate the size of the task.

'We’ll want to hit the ground running and try to get through against an established Championship side.'

Jackett has also welcomed the recent news that all sides in the EFL are to start receiving Covid-19 tests twice each week.
