From no pressure to plenty of it as Pompey head to Sheffield Wednesday

From no pressure ... to pressure. That's the switch Pompey make this weekend as they go from an FA Cup game where few gave them any chance of winning to a league match where plenty expect them to win.

Whoever Pompey were playing this weekend, it would feel big, given their position just outside the Championhip relegation zone and the way they surrendered the chance of any reward in thelr last league outing, at Bristol City.

But the fact they're travelling to face a Sheffield Wednesday team who have won only once all season in the league - that of course in the first fixture between the sides - ramps up the stakes considerably.

Defeat is almost unthinkable, especially at a time when fans are becoming increasingly agitated over a lack of progress in the transfer window. Millenic Alli has arrived from Luton and will go straight into the squad - and perhaps straight into the starting line-up as other wingers are out injured - but at the time of writing, he has been Pompey's only addition so far.

A draw with the Owls would perhaps not be a disaster but this does feel like a real opportunity for the Blues to get their second away win of the campaign and set them up nicely for the trip to Watford and the south coast derby at Fratton that follow.

The importance of the game is not lost on the players and Terry Devlin told the club website: 'It was nice to have a small break from the league and play a game where the pressure wasn’t really on us. Nobody was expecting us to get a result against Arsenal, which meant we could go out there and really enjoy the occasion.

'It was an unbelievable experience to be able to test ourselves against the very best in the country at the minute. We did a lot of good things – while there were also areas where we need to tidy up – and want to build on that at the weekend.

'The full focus has now switched back to the Championship and we’re concentrating on trying to get a positive result against Sheffield Wednesday. We’ll be treating this one like any other game and their position in the table won’t make a difference to that.

'They can maybe play without pressure themselves because of the situation they currently find themselves in. I’m sure they’ll be bang at it on Saturday and we need to be ready for that because we know what happened when we played them at Fratton Park earlier in the season.'
