Research on Sexuality in Football 05:49 - Mar 27 with 1815 viewstheacademic

Dear all,

I am involved in some university research that is looking at sexuality in football and I would appreciate a few minutes of your time to share your thoughts on this subject. The survey is anonymous and can be found here:

Thanks in advance for your time.

Why is the world concerned with footballers sexuality?? I couldn't give a flying one. I'm not concerned with anyone's sexuality be they a postman, actor, binman, footballer or astronaut.

Neither could I, but many do.

If we can get to the stage where no one is concerned then all people will be comfortable with their sexuality, then we will save lives.

If famous people are seen to be comfortable then teenagers will be too. And we know that sexuality concerns are a major cause of poor mental health for teenagers, and of suicide among teenagers.

I've done it too. Please could you send Clive (who runs the site) the results when it's done? Thanks

I agree but don't you think lots of people are bothered still in society? And because some people still think it's okay to give homophobic abuse to players. Until we change those kind of attitudes and make it clear that they're not acceptable, then these surveys are relevant.

For the benefit of theacademic, a previous discussion of the issue on this board:

You're taking Samuel at face value then? I think he's doing a Daily Mail version of satire (God help us), playing to his crowd and having a little snigger at those ruddy gays.

Sorry but these surveys will never be relevant. People do lie in surveys. And any survey on football message boards are a waste of space.

It's such a multilayered, complicated thing this, but seeing as I'm sitting here with no match preview to write feeling a bit bereft I'll have a stab...

I used my column in AKUTRs a few years ago to basically go off on the point you've just made. Why the big need and hunger for a footballer to 'come out' and publicly say they're into other men? We basically care about whether they're any good at football or not right? And if they're at QPR we care about how they behave, represent our club, work hard etc etc. But what they're into sexually or who they're attracted to? Who cares? Are we going to make all the lads that have foot fetish, or like older women, come out and detail what they're into as well?

And are we going to make all the gay ones say they're gay, so we can hold them up as great examples of how inclusive the sport is after all? I think they probably just want to come to work, work, go home to whoever they're going home to, not spend their life as a bloody poster boy, stripping off for Attitude.

And if all the gay lads want is equality, then people taking the piss out of them in the dressing room or singing things about them in the stand has to be part of that, because football is all about the "banter" and the pis taking and that's how dressing rooms and football crowds work. If you think a player should be able to come out and say they're gay and then nobody ever jokes about it, takes the pis a bit, sings a song about it, then that's not equality at all is it, because footballers get it from crowds and their team mates if they're a bit taller than average, a bit shorter, a bit older, a bit fatter, dodgy teeth, dodgy hairline, funny accent.

This article was sparked by St Josephine being the poster boy for the Rainbow Laces campaign, which firstly I think is a cynical attempt by a mostly abhorrent sport to make itself feel better about itself, and secondly was clearly the latest greatest idea from Joey's in-house PR team to make him appear slightly less of a cnt for a bit.

And, honestly, it was the worst thing I've ever written (huge long list for this) and I'm a bit ashamed of it now (apart from the Barton bit, which is fcking true).

Dave got and printed a reply an issue later from somebody pointing out (rightly, I think now, with hindsight), that for gay teenage boys coming through puberty scared and confused by the thoughts and feelings they're having, or for straight teenage boys growing up throwing terms like gay, fag, queer, bender or whatever around as an insult or a negative, having outwardly gay footballers could be a massive thing.

Imagine if there were dozens and dozens of outwardly gay footballers to the point where it just became a totally normal thing. Imagine, for instance, if the Premier League had 50 or so outwardly gay footballers (the stats suggest it's got at least that many inwardly gay footballers now) and it had been like that for years and years. Imagine if somebody like Thierry Henry had been outwardly gay, and how that would have made all the boys who grow up supporting Arsenal think and feel differently about it. It would, in a pretty short amount of time, normalise it, make kids see it's not a bad thing, or a good thing, it's just a normal thing, that people can't help or choose. Imagine the impact that would have on depression and suicide rates among young men in that situation?

So yeh, The Sun's barely concealed disgusting quest to out the first footballer, can get in the fcking sea. And no, I don't give a sht if, say Bright Osayi-Samuel is gay, straight, bi or whatever, as long as he's playing like he is for us at the moment.

But it would be a tremendous force for good if we could get to a point where the dozens and dozens of gay footballers that there obviouslty are in the game could be out and it just be completely normal.

Sexuality in football? Well, I lost my cherry after taking a girl I was seeing to QPR v Wimbledon back in the late 80's.

The game ended 0-0.

They didn't score, but I did

There were a few leading questions in there. I wasn't happy with the one about the player coming out after he retired.

Football has a toxic culture, and there are a lot of scum bag players that get away with an awful lot. Fans have a lot to answer to as well.

Generally a lot of the culture around football (especially the bigger clubs) is extremely vapid.
