First Ever Saints Game 11:21 - Aug 22 with 4775 viewsSaintNick

What was everyone's first ever live game watching Saints.

Mine was January 15th 1972 Manchester United at the Dell in the 3rd Round of the FA Cup 1-1 draw., Bobby Charlton scored for them and Jimmy Gabriel for us, some big names of the 60's & 70's on the pitch that day.

Stepney, Kidd, Morgan, Best, Charlton, Sadler & Law were United greats but when you looked at the other players you could see why they where in decline

I believe it was a friendly away to my local lot Poole Town in the late 80’s, with a few battles going on off the pitch over in the hospitality area.....

Saints won 2-0, I think. We were wearing the Denmark Hummel kit.

My first League game was a far from glorious 1-2 reverse at home to Luton in August 1990. Rideout scored. Regardless, I was hooked.

I remenber going to that game 1987 i think it was and Saints split the side with half playing Poole and the other half Basingstoke if I remember right.

The Poole (Bournemouth) lads were well up for it and chased a few brave Saints who had actually attacked them 1st dispite being outnumbered into the Hospitality on the otherside of the ground.

My 1st hame was in 1979 gainst Man City at home - though cant remeber the score that day.

My first game was against City as well

SOUTHAMPTON 2 CITY 1

League Cup 5th Round

13th December 1978

attendance 21,523

scorers
City Nicholl(84 o.g.)
Southampton Boyer(41), Hebbard(77)

ref Clive Thomas

City Corrigan, Donachie, Power, Booth, Watson, Owen, Channon, Bell, Kidd, Hartford, Deyna — sub Barnes(73)

Southampton Gennoe, Golac, Peach, Williams, Nicholl, Waldron, Ball, Boyer, Hebberd, Holmes, Curran — sub Baker(unused)

City struggled in a gale force wind at The Dell. After some great saves from big Joe Corrigan, the Saints finally took the lead in the 41st minute when a low Terry Curran cross was turned in from close range by Phil Boyer.
Southampton made it two in the 77th minute as Trevor Hebberd tucked away a pass from Chris Nicholl.
An own goal by Chris Nicholl with six minutes to go gave City some hope but it came too late for the Blues and they were out of the cup.

I vaguely remember going to a testimonial match against Forest which I think finished 4-0 to Forest. I can recall a pitch invasion afterwards and I ended up going home with my pockets full of grass and dirt. I'm sure Dirk can fill in the gaps.

Yes, that was the Lawrie McMenemy Testimonial, played on 11 May, 1979. I've still got the big, glossy programme from that match, obviously with a picture of Lawrie on the cover. Two months earlier, I'd been at Wembley to see them beat us 3-2 in the League Cup Final. We got some revenge when we beat them 4-1 in a league game at the Dell in November '79.

Yes, just 3 weeks after that testimonial, Forest won their first European Cup, in Munich.

How nice to have something different than the same argument about politics

Mine was Everton for my 9th birthday in 1982. Alan Ball's last match (and I am sure he missed a penalty), John Bailey getting dogs abuse from the crowd, and a beaten and bloodied Everton fan asking if he could escort my mum and I to the station and my mum telling him to clear off. Was a few years before I understood that.

30th October 1982 — Division 1 — Southampton 3-2 Everton (Cassells, Moran,

Keith Cassells headed Saints in front after 21 minutes of this game as he met David Armstrong’s corner for 1-0. Saints doubled their lead before half-time when Armstrong was brought down inside the area and Steve Moran converted a penalty, but the two goal margin was quickly cut in half to make it 2-1 at the break. The Toffees equalised just past the hour mark, but Danny Wallace rescued all three points for Saints when he headed in past Southall in the 75th minute.

Southampton team: Peter Shilton, Dennis Rofe, Nick Holmes, Steve Williams, Chris Nicholl, Mark Wright, Alan Ball, Steve Moran, Keith Cassells, Dave Armstrong, Danny Wallace

Yes, there were a few battles between Saints and Everton fans in that era. Scally mentions Saints fans in his book as one of the few firms who ever sought out the Cutters on their own turf in County Road.

I must be old compared to you lot. First game v Luton on 27th December 1949. We had played them away the day before. We won 2 - 1 but being 5 years old I don’t remember much. Watched the game from my uncle’s shoulders whilst in the Milton. From what I read this game was the first one where the chocolate boxes were used. Anyway almost 27000 watched it.

What a team we had in '82. In your lineup there are 3 England's captains. I believe in that year we played 7 past and future captains. Can you name the other 4 ?

My first Saints game was a 2-1 victory for Everton in the third round of the cup, maybe 1985. Graeme Sharp got 2. Don’t know who scored for Saints.

My first Saints game after moving down here was at SMS, Saints v Chelsea reserves game. Chelsea went three up in no time. Franny Benali came on as sub and absolutely wiped out Carlton Cole who had been having a field day. It was right in front of us in the Kingsland stand and was one of the strongest, possibly unnecessary challenges I’ve ever seen. Cole was stretchered off and Saints scores a late equaliser to draw 3-3.

Keegan, Mills, Watson and Channon all played that year (I think, Watson played against us at The Dell that calendar year as well)

Toffee, I reckon that was 87 and Gordon Hobson scored for us. I bet young Solent Toffee never dreamed as he watched his heroes that afternoon, that he would end loving the opposition as much in later life. Stop fighting it.

V Man United 1987. Drew 1-1 my grandad took me, Nick Holmes scored for us. Remember seeing Man U fans after game throwing fireworks, very exciting. Would have been before that but lived in Cornwall from the age of 5-12 so used to go and watch Plymouth Argyle with my dad, first game was against Sunderland who were managed by Lawrie Mac, they won 4-2 and remember Sunderland fans doing a conga.

I think that’s the game where Bestie got sent off and Rodney Marsh threw his toys out of the pram by booting the ball into touch when it came his way.

Yes, it is. That's George Best getting the 2nd red card ever shown in English football. David Wagstaffe got shown the first one, playing for Wolves at Leyton Orient a bit earlier that day. The Dell atmosphere was at its most intimidating that day, which was one of the reasons Best saw red.

Blyth scored 2 and so did MacDougall. 3 of our goals were headers. It was always easy to score headed goals against Bobby Moore. Ron Davies used to love playing against him. Even when Moore was at his peak in the 1966-67 season, we beat his West Ham team 6-2.

Southampton 2 - 1 Liverpool 1986 Dad took me and we stood in the Milton end. I remember getting crushed as the crowd swayed forward when saints scored. Went on to see saints several times that season and never saw them lose. Probably my fav was seeing us beat Leicester in the snow

87 that sounds about right. I always had a bit of a soft spot for Saints mainly because Everton all used to beat them at home (they still do, to be fair).

Over the years I have been to loads of Saints games especially when they became my ‘other’ team in their EFL days. Bent Eric used to wind me up when I’d get out of my seat to politely applaud when Saints scored, misinterpreting this for actual support!!
