BONE IDLE GOSSIP: Pompey may be in crisis, but you can't beat a drama
BONE IDLE GOSSIP: Pompey may be in crisis, but you can't beat a drama

SOMETHING struck me as I left Lord’s last weekend.

I think it was a Vauxhall Astra, but I didn’t get its details.

Then something else struck me – it was a long time since I had updated my all-time list of the greatest sporting occasions I had seen live.

The reason for considering this a week ago was that I had just witnessed a new contender for my top 10 – Hampshire’s last-ball win over Warwickshire in a thrilling sun-drenched CB40 final. Fabulous drama.

So I’ve spent the past week trying to draw up that top 10. And it’s not been easy.

It’s Pompey-dominated as you’d expect, but other teams – and at least one other sport – do get a look-in.

My original plan was to run through my top 10 here today, but I’m not quite ready.

I’ve whittled it down to 12 or 13 fantastic matches and sporting events I’ve been privileged enough to attend.

But the final few choices need further mulling over, so you’ll have to wait another week before I put the Pick of the Pops theme tune on and count down from ten to one.

I can list a few Pompey moments that won’t make it into the top 10, though: the night we played AC Milan; the day Pedro Mendes’ wonder-strike v Man City got the Great Escape under way; the Lomana Lualua-inspred 4-1 win over Southampt*n; the night Teddy Sheringham’s hat-trick took us top of the Premier League with a 4-0 victory over Bolton, and our various Premier League and FA Cup wins over Liverpool and Manchester United.

All great days and nights, but not quite up with my greatest.

I think I’ve got my ‘hit parade’ down to matches seen at three football grounds and two other sporting venues, although there’s a third ‘other’ vying to get in.

The beauty of sport is that you never quite know when the next memorable match is coming. It may be next week; it may not be for years.

Tune in next week for the rundown. In the meantime, if you want to send me your own top 10, or guess at what’s in mine, feel free...
