Interview with a Wednesday fan
Friday, 24th Jan 2014 05:40 by Col

FA Cup action this weekend, and we've grabbed a Sheffield Wednesday fan to answer a few questions for us.

1) Who are you,and how long have you supported Sheffield Wednesday?

John Spencer, aged 43. Married. Father of 4 from Millhouse Green, Penistone, Sheffield. Moved here 5 years ago after 38 years in West Yorkshire. Born in Halifax and brought up in Brighouse. Supported SWFC since the age of 12 when I persuaded my Dad to take me to Hillsborough after being told by my Grandad who was originally from Sheffield that Wednesday were his team as a youngster and that whilst he had moved to Halifax and knew my Dad supported and took me to watch Halifax Town (I remember the rivalry with Rochdale throughout the 80's very well), I would love it at Hillsborough. As soon as I arrived, I was in awe at the sheer size of the stadium and once in, felt this was "my club". Went on my birthday, Easter, Christmas, New Years, Bank Holidays etc with my Dad until I could catch the bus via Huddersfield from the age of 15. Once I passed my driving test a couple of years later, I would drive with friends home and away. Season tickets were the norm. Moved to current address to be nearer to Hilsborough.......oh, and the Peak District!

2) What makes Sheffield Wednesday different from every other club?

The name is different for a start! No Town, City or any other common name like erm (cough).....United.

Excellent crowds home and away regardless of the Division. Unlike the Pigs across the City, other clubs' fans respect Wednesday rather than dislike/hate. I appreciate not everyone but most!

Play in Blue and White - my favourite colours. Especially if together with an owl emblem attached. :).

3) Best player / manager / Sheffield Wednesday game?

Favourite player - Chris Waddle. Absolute sublime and a footballing dream to watch.

Big Ron first time round.

Would be too easy if I chose beating Man Utd in the League Cup in 1991 or Sheff Utd in the FA Cup Semi Final in 1993 and therefore getting to both Cup Finals that year but my best game was beating Everton away 4-1 on Boxing Day 1994 after being 1 down. Guy Whittingham was immense and Wednesday fans spent the whole game in full voice (as usual) at a game where we filled the away end but expected defeat.

4) Worst player / manager / Sheffield Wednesday game?

Worst player on ability - Jon Beswetherick.
Worst player as a complete waste of time/let down - Jay Bothroyd.

Hard to decide between Alan Irvine and Dave Jones (although Terry Yorath comes in a close 3rd).

There has been many nightmare games that I've attended but the most recent that stands out was Birmingham away this season. 4-0 and taken apart. I could pick another couple from this season alone. Going back a few years to 19.9.99, we were hammered 8-0 at Newcastle with a certain Alan Shearer scoring 5 of them. Ouch!

5) How's the season going far and does it weight up to expectations?

Many Wednesday fans soon realised last season that Dave Jones was not the builder he claimed to be after finishing Gary Megson's work taking us up the season before. Based on this and the apparent lack of money being invested by our Chairman Milan Mandaric (eg big money signings), we expected a mid table at best but another long hard season. We were humiliated at Rotherham in the League Cup and have been in the bottom 3 for most of Jones' tenure. Since his long overdue dismissal, Stuart Gray has done an excellent job as Caretaker Manager. It looks as if he is about to be announced as our permanent Manager but the length of contract is unknown and most think it should be until the Summer.

6) Any thoughts on Rochdale, currently or historically?

My personal thoughts are from the late 70's and throughout the 80's, where I recall that rivalry with Halifax Town. A Divison 4 club that averaged between 1000 and 2000 fans per game, like Halifax, but always travelled in good numbers to the Shay.

A smallish ground overall but with one of the best away stands due to it's size and going down the full side of the pitch.

Currently very well under Keith Hill who has an obvious affinity with the club. Excellent comeback at Chesterfield in midweek after 2 cracking 3-0 wins. Having beaten Leeds 6-0 recently, I think we'd have prefered to play them than Rochdale! I'm not just saying that after seeing your 2-0 scoreline, I watched the highlights and you were not far off getting 6 with the chances you had.

7) It never seemed to work out for our former striker Chris O'Grady at Wednesday. Why was that?

Two words - Dave Jones.Words fail me with his" management" and "tactics".

COG was treated badly from what we as fans could see but he was not the only one. It was made even worse as COG was scoring for fun whilst on loan at relegation rivals Barnsley and we were struggling to find the back of the net. Luckily he wasn't allowed to play against us and we won that game!

He did the same with Chris Maguire who, unlike COG, Jones brought in. Under Stuart Gray, Maguire is not only playing, but has been a revelation.

8) Now no disrespect meant whatsoever with this question, but from the outset, Wednesday seem a rather old fashioned club in terms of a proper traditional ground, best days were in the past and almost in limbo with a Chairman more interested in selling the club than seeing them succeed.Whilst there's no doubting the size of your fanbase, but can a club like Sheffield Wednesday return to the top table of English football again or has football moved on and left you behind?

We won't return to the Premiership as things stand. Financially, we are nowhere near the top end of the Championship, never mind the Premiership. Huddersfield Town for example, get half our crowds but have just bought Nahki Wells from Bradford for £1.3m plus add ons aswell as other players. We are not even able to compete with them. Milan Mandaric wants to sell (at a profit) and seems to have been very tight in every aspect. At the start of last season, he allowed Dave Jones to spend a lot in terms of many players coming in on mainly free transfers (Antonio excepted) but in the main it was too much quantity and too little quality. These contracts continued which have hindered us.

9) Any predictions for the game?

I wish Connor Wickham was playing! He has made such a difference this season. However, Caolan Lavery (another forgotten lad) is back in the squad, scoring (after a productive goal scoring loan at Plymouth) and could play on Saturday.

Predictions, I think there will be a winner on Saturday but by 1 goal. I obviously hope it's us but honestly believe it could go either way.

Being the away team, seeing your performance against Leeds, your position in League 2 and recent results, I will take the draw!

All the best to Rochdale and if it is a replay, you will all be welcome at Hillsborough and the local pubs around. Mine's a Guinness!
