Pompey hit out over new trophy plans

Pompey's chief executive has hit out at the latest plans to allow top clubs' B teams to start mixing in the same circles as Football League clubs.

After widespread criticism of the FA's idea of a 'fifth division' in which Premier clubs' B teams could take part, the Football League has come up with what it sees as a compromise - an expanded Football League trophy in which the 48 League One and League Two clubs are joined by 16 B teams.

But Mark Catlin appears as much against this idea as he was against the earlier proposal - something the vast majority of fans will be with him on.

He told The News: 'I am morally opposed to B teams entering another competition that affects the integrity of Football League clubs and its structures. I will be doing everything in my power to convince anyone and everyone that this is a recipe for disaster and needs to be put to bed.

‘You cannot compromise. I have read the plans and, in my opinion, we should just say no. This is not a grey area. It is a black and white area and will be a creeping process if allowed in.

‘You can read all the plans you want, the bottom line is I am totally against any proposals that allow B teams or nursery clubs to infiltrate the league and cup structure. The Football League has just celebrated 125 years of existence and during that time people running the clubs have been custodians.

‘I realise time marches on but the stage we are at now is such a seismic shift. I can only hope people see through the plans for what they are. There is no point in putting short-term financial gain above long-term interests of the Football League and its member clubs.’
