Brian Murphy is looking at two weeks out with a groin injury - but Paul Jones is set for three months on the sidelines with a damaged knee.

And that means loan stopper Aaron McCarey will make his debut at Bristol Rovers on Saturday and is likely to appear for at least another two games before Murphy is fit again.

Pompey boss Paul Cook told the club website: 'We’ve known about Aaron for quite a bit of time and we’re pleased to bring him into the side. Brian’s hoping to make the Cambridge away game, while Paul’s looking at a possible three months on the sidelines.

'That’s really disappointing for him because he’s worked hard, stayed patient and had an excellent game at Oxford — a lot of that point we got was down to his performance.'

Cook is expecting a stiff test against Rovers and added: “They’re a really good side and Darrell (Clarke, manager) has done a fantastic job — it just shows what a bit of patience can do.

'He’s one of the bright young managers in the game at the moment and has recruited well. It will be a test for us and I think they could be one of the dark horses to do well in League Two this season.'

Pompey could go top with a win.
