Pompey 1 Morecambe 1: Fratton frustration again - but top three draws closer

It was never likely to be easy following up a fine victory on the road with a similar success at home - and sure enough Pompey let a lead slip and had to settle for a point at home to Morecambe.

The Blues seem to have a mental block whenever they come back to Fratton after a good away victory. Remember last season when a 3-0 win at Accrington was followed by a 3-0 home loss to Newport, or earlier this season when a 3-1 triumph at Luton came four days before a 2-1 slump against Stevenage.

At least this time they didn't lose, but nevertheless it did feel like two points lost as Morecambe - who spent most of the evening defending but always looked dangerous on the break - claimed a point.

Even more galling - a defeat for Carlisle at Cheltenham meant Pompey would have moved into third place with a victory. They will get another chance to put the pressure on the sides above them when they play Crewe at Fratton on Saturday.

Pompey had the lion's share of the play for the first hour but it remained goalless as shots went high or wide and the visiting keeper Barry Roche kept efforts out.

The introduction of Kal Naismith - not for the first time this season - proved an inspirational. With his first involvement, immediately after coming on, he took a pass from Michael Doyle in his stride then unleashed a 25-yard shot that flew past Roche to put Pompey ahead.

It was looking good for Pompey but Morecambe, with 71 fans there to cheer them on, kept battling and levelled through Lee Molyneux when a quick break down the middle after a free-kick that followed a break in play was worked to him on the edge of the area and he fired in low past David Forde.

Pompey: Forde; Evans, Burgess, Clarke, Stevens; Linganzi (Rose 79), M.Doyle (c); Baker (Chaplin 56), Roberts, Bennett (Naismith 63); E.Doyle. Subs not used: O’Brien, Whatmough, Lowe, Hunt

Referee: Stephen Martin

Attendance: 15,592 (71 away fans)
