Pompey 2 Cambridge 1: Leaders are still in sight

A week of celebration didn't stop Pompey chalking up another win and closing the gap on leaders Doncaster.

Carl Baker and Kal Naismith's goals put the Blues in command against Cambridge, and although the visitors got one back, Pompey hung on for the three points without too many alarms.

Pompey are just four points behind Rovers with two to play so go to Mansfield next week with the silverware still a possibility, if an unlikely one.

Nicke Kabamba and Stanley Aborah started for Paul Cook's men with Matt Clarke back in defence and on 20 minutes, in a wonderful party atmosphere at the Park, another assist from Enda Stevens set up Baker for a simple sidefooted finish.

Cambridge had a number of half-chances before the break before Baker and Kabamba went close to a second for Pompey.

Naismith extended his lead at the top of the Pompey goal charts six minutes into the break, curling a lovely free-kick beyond the keeper and into the corner after the impressive Aborah was fouled 25 yards out.

Luke Berry pulled one back ten minutes from time and the same player had David Forde needing to be at his most alert to keep out two further efforts, either of which could have levelled the score.

It was another victory, though, for Pompey on a sunny afternoon when the fans made the most of their new-found 'promoted' status and thoroughly enjoyed their football.
