Boss and skipper speak of their Pompey pride

Paul Cook reflected on Pompey winning the League Two title - and declared that the song 'We're on our way' adopted by Blues fans in recent weeks could not put it better.

The manager was emotional after the 6-1 win over Cheltenham secured the title and was still on cloud nine as thousands descended on Southsea Common for the title to be lifted on Sunday.

Cook told the Pompey website: 'I’ve got to say how proud I am of the players and I don’t think you could write a better script than that. We’ve gone from the pain we felt going off the pitch at Plymouth last season to the joy we all feel now.

'I’ve said all that year the league tables don’t lie and we’ve probably only been top for about 10 minutes. In my opinion the best team is the one that finishes in first place — and that’s Portsmouth Football Club.

'Doncaster and Plymouth have both enjoyed fantastic seasons and credit to them for that, but the run our lads have been on recently is absolutely exceptional. To see my team play the way we did throughout that second half was a very proud moment for me.

'The game is all about players and I’m very lucky to have the ones we’ve got here. I’m also proud of this city and everyone at the club. I’ll have a few beers with the chairman and everyone else. The fans sing that we’re on our way back — and we are.'

Equally delighted was skipper Michael Doyle, who told the club website: 'It feels great and I’m just so delighted for everyone involved with this club. It was an emotional moment. I’ve played more than 700 games and never won a title, so it’s fantastic to be able to call myself a champion.

'We’ve been so far behind, so it feels a bit surreal and I don’t think it’s quite sunk in that we’ve won the league. It’s all a bit of a blur and it’s a shame we couldn’t get back out on the pitch, but it should be an amazing day on the common.

'I’ve only been here two years, but I know what this club has been through, so this is a special achievement. People always say that it’s the best team that wins the league — and we were the best team.'
