Jackett hot favourite for Pompey as Cook explains departure

Kenny Jackett is already the strong favourite to take over from Paul Cook - with Pompey reportedly having made him their No1 target to be their new boss.

The former Wolves and Millwall boss is as short-priced as 1/6 with some bookies to take over from Cook, whose move to Wigan was finally confirmed on Wednesday afternoon.

The News reported last night: 'Pompey are determined to quickly move forward with appointing a new man at the helm. And Jackett fits the qualities seen as vital in taking the club forward in their third-tier assault next season.

'The Blues’ managerial wish list is for someone with a proven track record at delivering success at that level. Crucial, too, is to recruit a candidate with experience of handling pressure at a club of Pompey’s stature. With League One promotions at Wolves and Millwall, along with success in the fourth tier with Swansea on his résumé, Jackett ticks those boxes.'

Other names being mentioned include Gary Bowyer, Steve Evans, Nathan Jones, Warren Joyce and Paul Tisdale.

Meanwhile Cook said managing Pompey had been an honour and a privilege. In a message to Blues fans, Cook told The News: It has been an honour and a privilege for me to have been the manager of Portsmouth Football Club for the past two seasons. I will treasure my time at the club forever — the memories of being crowned League Two champions and pushing such a great club back up the football pyramid has given me, my staff and my family tremendous pleasure and pride.

'Since gaining promotion to League One and subsequently winning the League Two title, I came out and stated that I would never wish to leave the club. As the weeks have transpired it became quite clear to me that, with the realisation of new owners coming in, there were many grey areas both personally and professionally for myself and my staff. Amid this uncertainty I have decided to take up a new challenge with Wigan Athletic Football Club.'
