New man sees Blues moving in right direction

Nathan Thompson can't wait for his Fratton Park bow after joining Pompey from Swindon.

The right-back, who can also play at centre half or in midfield, joined on a two-year contract and told the club webite: 'It’s fantastic to join Portsmouth — the size of the club and what they’ve achieved in the past is a huge attraction. I signed for Swindon at the age of 12, so it’s a strange feeling to leave, but coming here is amazing and I’m looking forward to the new campaign.

'There’s a real feelgood factor around the place after what happened last season and it’s exciting to be a part of that. With the fan-base we’ve got, this club should be in the Championship or Premier League.

'The season ticket sales have gone past 10,000, so I’m looking forward to walking out at Fratton Park on August 5. I had a couple of other options, but when I looked at the team, the management and the crowd, I saw a club that was moving in the right direction.

'I grew up playing at right-back, but am always willing to help the team out and that meant moving into the centre of a three or a two. I felt that I adapted to that position and coped quite well, so I’ll take to wherever the manager wants me to play this season.'

Thompson is Kenny Jackett's first signing, with more expected in the next couple of weeks.
