Bluebirds soar into next round - but Pompey make them battle
Tuesday, 8th Aug 2017 23:03 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey are out of the League Cup at the first hurdle - but not without putting up a fight at Cardiff.

They led at the interval through an own goal and were good value for that, but the Bluebirds levelled innediately after the break and always looked the likelier to progress after that.

But the Championship side needed extra-time to get through 2-1.

Pompey took the lead just after the half-hour when Kal Naismith found space for a low cross that Cardiff defender Sean Morrison turned into his own net.

Minutes into the second half Cardiff levelled when Nathaniel Mendez-Laing finished well after good work by Lee Tomlin.

That was one ex-Pompey player who had netted against them - and another followed suit in the second period of extra-time after the Blues had battled so well to take the Bluebirds all the way.

Joe Ralls had become the first fourth sub to appear against Pompey by the time Greg Halford converted from a corner.

Conor Chaplin was thrown on to try to take it to penalties but City held on without too many scares.

Afterwards boss Kenny Jackett revealed that loan signing Tarieq Holmes-Dennis would be out for three to four months with an injury picked up against Rochdale.

Earlier in the day Gary Roberts left Pompey by mutual consent - with fans quick to pay tribute to the midfielder's contribution to the cause in his two years at Fratton.
