Midfielder unites fans as he leaves Pompey

Gary Roberts has left Pompey with the good wishes of fans and his manager ringing in his ears.

If there have been some rumblings in recent weeks about why the midfielder was still at Fratton, such thoughts were hard to find among the reaction to news he had left the club by mutual consent.

Social media was awash with fans thanking Roberts for his service over two years in which he scored close to 20 goals in 74 appearances.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett told The News: ‘Gary made a really good contribution to this football club. I join everybody else in thanking him for what he has done and wishing him all the best for the future.’

Chief executive Mark Catlin added: ‘I’d like to offer my sincere thanks to Gary — both on a personal level and on behalf of everyone at the club. I hope he will forever be remembered for what he achieved at Pompey, especially last season when we went on that fantastic run to win the title.

‘His contribution over the past two years has been invaluable — he has been a fantastic player for this club. We all wish him every success for the future.’

Roberts does not have a new club yet but his departure is thought likely to free up a space in the squad for Jackett to bring in a new central midfielder.

The Pompey boss praised his team for pushing Championship side Cardiff all the way in Tuesday night's League Cup first-round game, which they lost 2-1 in extra time.

Next up is a trip to Oxford on Saturday.
