Point at fancied Wigan will stand Blues in good stead

Keeper Luke McGee feels Pompey's point at Wigan is a sign they are settling well into League one.

The recruit from Spurs was many people's man of the match at the DW Stadium, keeping the Blues in it to set them up for the fightback that saw Conor Chaplin claim a point with a headed finish.

McGee was content with the result and told the Pompey website: 'It was disappointing when the goal went in so early and you hope that’s not the way the game’s going to go. Sometimes you make saves that you’re not necessarily expected to make, but I’ll take that any day of the week.

'Christian Burgess and Jack Whatmough were also brilliant at the back and I felt that we deserved a point in the end for the way we stuck at it. There are 11 men on the pitch and we’re all doing our job. There will be times when we make a mistake at the back and vice versa. The important thing is that we stick together.

'We came in at half-time and set out what we wanted to do after the break — and I think we did that well. Wigan probably set the bar for teams in League One and they’ve got players who could comfortably compete in the Championship.

'But Conor did well for the goal — for a little lad he somehow managed to get about eight feet off the ground! It was nice to get something after the way we started the game, so if we can iron those issues out then it will stand us in good stead.'

Next up for the Blues is a home game for Rotherham on Sunday, while all eyes this week will be on whether there are any more comings and goings at Fratton ahead of the transfer window closing.
