Pompey's good spells don't spell victory
Wednesday, 22nd Nov 2017 20:54 by pompey-fans.com staff

Kenny Jackett felt it was in Pompey's attacking third that their clash with Peterborough was lost.

The manager, on the day his new two-year contract extension was sealed, felt his team played well enough but didn't have a killer instinct where it mattered.

Jack Marriott gave Posh the lead in the opening stages of the second half and Marcus Maddison's free kick was headed into his own goal by Matt Clarke to make it two.

Conor Chaplin halved the deficit 12 minutes from the end but Pompey couldn't complete the comeback.

Jackett told the club website: 'For all our play up to their box, we seemed to be lacking a cutting edge. We didn’t get enough shots away in those positions, although Curtis Main had a good effort that hit the post.

'Jamal caused problems, but was unable to find that extra half a yard or delivery — the second half was typical of that. They also struck the woodwork around the same time, but I thought we negated Peterborough quite well in the first half.

'They have got dangerous forwards and showed that they can produce something out of nothing. There were long spells when we were on top and looking threatening, but the key moments went against us and that was frustrating.

'We just couldn’t be incisive enough in the danger areas and get the shots away that we needed to.'

Pompey look to get back to winning ways at home to Plymouth on Saturday, when they will be without hamstring injury victim Brett Pitman.
