He was never a first-choice under Kenny Jackett and in recent times he struggled to get anywhere near a first-team starting spot.

But that did not stop the Blues manager paying tribute to Drew Talbot as the defender parted company with the club.

The 31-year-old has left Fratton Park in a mutually-agreed move and is said to be interesting Chesterfield, with a move to a new club likely in January.

Jackett told the club website: 'Drew’s intention is to head back north and I’m sure we’ll see him settle with a new club in January.

'We wish him well for the future and thank him for everything he’s done during his time with Pompey. In my short time working with him, I found Drew to be a first class professional and also a very good man.'

Meanwhile Pompey's defensive options have had a boost with news that Oli Hawkins is set to be fit for the trip to Shrewsbury at the weekend.

Hawkins has been effective in central defence after starting the season as a forward. He has missed the past three games with a hamstring injury.

But The News has reported that Kal Naismith is not yet ready to return as he recovers from the leg injury picked up against Plymouth.
