Pompey corners could send boss round the bend
Sunday, 28th Jan 2018 19:52 by pompey-fans.com staff

Start converting more often from corners - that was Kenny Jackett's message to his players after a 1-0 home defeat to Shrewsbury.

The Blues won 12 of them against the Shrews but didn't make any of them count, while Shrewsbury had only five but put one away for the only goal of the game.

It seems set-piece conversion is something to work on at training as they prepare for their next League One test, at home to Doncaster next Saturday.

Jackett told the Pompey website: 'We put so much pressure on Shrewsbury, but obviously couldn’t find the goals we needed. For the amount of corners we have on a regular basis, we just don’t do enough, while they scored from one they had in the first half.

'We need to do more from those situations because we should be having more shots and creating more chances. We’re a big enough team to be able to get balls into the box and get on the end of them. That’s cost us on this occasion.

'Shrewsbury are a very good defensive unit and we were able to compete with them in midfield, but didn’t make the most of clear-cut chances.'

Jackett declined to be critical of referee David Coote, even if he might have disagreed with his decisions not to give Pompey a penalty for a first half handball and to send off Adam May for two second half bookings.

The manager added: 'I appealed for the penalty and thought it was a handball, but the referee didn’t give it and we have to accept that. To send Adam off for something soft like that was harsh on him, although it’s something that he’ll learn from.'
