Bone Idle Gossip: Who's your favourite Pompey player and why?
Bone Idle Gossip: Who's your favourite Pompey player and why?
Thursday, 15th Feb 2018 20:59 by Steve Bone

I’m starting another of my unofficial, unscientific, finger-in-the-wind Pompey polls, you’ll be pleased to know.

Some would probably rather I launched a series of Pompey rolls (ham and cheese, sausage and onion etc) but you can’t please all the people all the time, or in my case, many of the people much of the time.

Having done reader votes in the past couple of seasons for your favourite big games, other games, Blues goalie, defender, striker, winger and midfielder, this time I’m going for an open-ended question I hope will throw up 100 different nominations.

Simply... I want you to vote for your favourite Pompey player of all-time, including a brief summary of why that player gets your vote.

Having mentioned this once in my programme column, I have had a handful of votes already and, as I expected, they included a mixture of obvious and left-field names (and by left-field, I don’t just mean Alan Rogers and Matt Taylor).

There is an important distinction to be made here between ‘favourite’ players and ‘best’ players.

Your favourite player may also be, in your opinion, the best player you have seen. Equally, they may not.

You may think one of Lassana Diarra, Robert Prosinecki or Len Phillips is the most technically-gifted type you’ve seen in a blue shirt, but rate Lomana Lualua or Alan McLoughlin as your favourite, for example.

As hinted, I’m hoping to compile a top 100 of your Blues faves, so I may have to keep the ‘lines’ open a while.

So don’t delay, get thinking and get voting — tweet me at @stevebone1 or email me at stevebonepfc@googlemail.com

This column first appeared in the Sports Mail. Read Steve Bone in the Sports Mail every Sunday and in 'View from the North Stand' in the Pompey programme.
