Crisis eases at Pompey but young guns still needed
Thursday, 22nd Feb 2018 19:14 by pompey-fans.com staff

Kal Naismith should be fit to face Blackpool - but Brett Pitman and Gareth Evans are three weeks away from fitness and Stuart O'Keefe four weeks.

It means selection options will still be thin on the ground for Kenny Jackett on Saturday when the Seasiders come south.

Naismith was hurt in training but Jackett told The News today: ‘Kal picked up a groin injury. It’ll be a few days, I hope, and he should be okay for the weekend.

Jackett will be calm about his squad strength after seeing his young side win 2-1 at Flettwood on Tuesday night. But he will also be aware of the need to avoid relying too much on youngsters long-term.

Assistant boss Joe Gallen said: 'We don’t have too many fit players here, but we’ve been impressed with the ones we do have available. We’re excited about the young group that played on Tuesday evening because they showed so much spirit.

'They performed very well and we’d be delighted if we had everyone fit and they played a similar way at Fleetwood.'

Pompey host Blackpool knowing the top six is tantalisingly close again. They're ninth on 49 points and the two sides immediately above them, Plymouth and Bradford, face each other this weekend.
