Pompey find out their fixture fate - and boss is happy
Thursday, 21st Jun 2018 20:59 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey will begin and end the new season at home.

They'll play host to Luton on the opening day of the 2018/19 season - Saturday, August 4 - and entertain Accrington on the last day exactly nine months later.

Both opponents are newly promoted from League Two.

Blackpool will be Pompey's first road trip, with a journey to the north west in line for August 11.

Sunderland are the new 'big boys' of League One and will visit Pompey on December 22, with the return at the Stadium of Light on April 27.

Pompey go to Gillingham on Boxing Day and are at home to AFC Wimbledon on New Year’s Day.

There are a total of five midweek league games scheduled - two at home and three away.

Boss Kenny Jackett told the club website he was pleased to be starting with a home match. He said: 'It’s always good to kick things off with a home game and we’ve also got a home cup tie early on.

'We’re pleased with the start we’ve been given, although it certainly won’t be easy — that’s the case with every side we’ll face. Luton beat us in the FA Cup last season and will be one of the fancied sides after coming up from League Two. There could be seven games for us to play in August and that month might have a big say on how we do.'
