Luton in new man's sights as he delights in Fratton return

Anton Walkes has spoken of his delight at being back at Pompey - and can't wait to do battle with Luton when the League One season begins on Saturday.

The versatile former Spurs man has returned to Fratton as a permanent addition to the squad after a successful loan spell last season.

He marked his return with a superb strike to earn the Blues a 1-1 draw against FC Utrecht, in their final friendly on Satuday, and is now eyeing up making more headlines when the competitive stuff gets under way.

He told the Pompey website: 'It’s been great to be back and I’ve enjoyed the training and the games, which have been of a high standard. I think it’s going to be a good season and it’s all about being ready for the first league match next week.

'Luton did very well last time out, but we’ve set ourselves goals and it’s important that we reach them.'

Walkes said of his goal against Utrecht: 'The goal was a bit more spectacular than the last one I scored here and it’s always nice to contribute. My run-up was fairly decent and it was a great lay-off from Pits. Someone had already hit a worldie, so I thought ‘why not?’

'I saw the keeper out of the corner of my eye, but knew that I could go back across goal and leave him flat-footed. Luckily it went in. Utrecht finished fifth in their division last season, so obviously don’t play about. They popped the ball around in the first 20 minutes and kept us moving.

'But I felt we had better chances overall than they did and there are a lot of positives to take out of the game.”
