Pompey must not start praising themselves - and won't
Tuesday, 21st Aug 2018 10:26 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey have already had their best start to a league campaign for 30. They can up that to their best for nearly 40 with a win at Bristol Rovers tonight - but you won't find Kenny Jackett giving too much store to such stats.

He is trying to keep players and fans' feet firmly on the ground ahead of the tricky trip to Bristol Rovers, where Kyle Bennett, among others, is likely to be out to end Pompey's perfect start.

He told the Pompey website: 'Football is about looking forward — and we have to focus on facing Bristol Rovers and Doncaster pretty quickly. 'If we get too pleased or start patting ourselves on the back then we can get undone, so we brought the players in on Sunday morning.

'We wanted them to look ahead to what is a big week and a hard one. They should take confidence from Saturday, but also learn what they can do better. This division is different to last season and I think it could be quite tight, with a number of sides ambitious to do well.

'There were times last term when we lost a lot of players, although you never like to use that as an excuse. But there’s no doubt we were short in certain areas and it’s something we’ve tried to address this time.'

Jackett is not thought to have any new injury worries, and may go with a starting line-up unchanged from the one that took on Oxford on Saturday.
