Rovers 1 Pompey 2: Late drama sees Pompey make it four from four
Tuesday, 21st Aug 2018 22:05 by pompey-fans.com staff

Ronan Curtis likes away games - and Gareth Evans likes scoring. Curtis followed up his Blackpool starring show with a late winner at Bristol Rovers... after Evans had scored for the second game in a row to put Pompey ahead.

The hard-working 2-1 win was Pompey's fourth League One success from four and leaves them second in the league, level on points with Peterborough.

Kenny Jackett named an unchanged starting line-up and it was Pompey - in their new black third strip - who drew first blood when Evans fired in a superb shot just after the half hour after Curtis and Oli Hawkins had flicked on a long ball.

Jackett's team had plenty of defending to do before and after that goal but did it will, with Craig MacGillivray making a couple of sharp saves.

It looked like Rovers had earned a point when Chris Lines converted a penalty after Curtis was judged to have handled at a Gas corner. But Lines was sent off minures later for an ugly challenge on sub Brett Pitman.

But this is a resilient Pompey team and it was they who snatched the win bonus when Curtis latched on to a long ball that Pitman flicked on and squeezed a shot home.

Even then Kyle Bennett almost levelled but was denied by a superb MacGillivray save.

Pompey: MacGillivray; Walkes, Whatmough, Clarke, Brown; B Thompson, Evans (c), Naylor; Lowe, Hawkins (Pitman 77), Curtis (Haunstrup 90). Subs not used: McGee, Burgess, Close, Wheeler, Chaplin

Referee: Graham Salisbury

Attendance: 9,073 (1,137 Pompey fans)
