Pompey's players are digging in for victories

Ronan Curtis has suggested that the squad's willingness to work hard for each other is one of the factors behind Pompey's excellent start to the season.

Speaking after the 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers, which made it four wins from four in the league, the matchwinner told the club website: 'It’s unbelievable. We’re over the moon and everyone’s buzzing — there’s a really good atmosphere in the dressing room.

'We’re all prepared to dig in for each other here and that’s what you need if you want to win promotion. Everyone battled the whole way through, but we also outplayed them at times and I felt we deserved the win.'

Curtis said he was delighted to get the winner - which came about 10 minutes after his handball had given away the penalty that saw Rovers draw level.

'It didn’t matter who scored the winner, but I’m just lucky it fell for me,' he told the website. 'I was scared that the defender was going to get back and clear the ball away, but it just about went over the line.

'My head went then and I lost the plot a bit as I went over to celebrate with our fans. It was outstanding. If somebody had told me what I’d do after a few games here, then I wouldn’t really have believed them.

'But I said when I first signed that I was here to score goals and provide assists — and that’s what I’m doing'
