There goes the perfect start - but Pompey content with Doncaster point
Saturday, 25th Aug 2018 22:15 by pompey-fans.com staff

The 100% start is over - the unbeaten start is not.

Pompey couldn't find a winner at Doncaster as they registered their first draw after starting the season with four wins - but nor could Rovers, who had dominant spells but ended up perhaps a little fortunate not to have been beaten.

Pompey were unchanged for a third game in a row but it was Doncaster who had the best of the first half, putting Pompey under serious pressure and failing to take an interval lead because of a mixture of poor finishing and resolute defending.

Kenny Jackett's side were much better after the break with Ben Close and Brett Pitman adding life to their display.

Gareth Evans had scored in each of the previous two games and he twice went close to making it three in three as Pompey sensed a winner.

Late on Doncaster saw their keeper Marko Marosi sent off for handling outside the area after Ronan Curtis ran on to a through ball. The free kick came to nothing and Curtis and Co could not find a way past Ben Whiteman, who deputised for the closing stages.

So Pompey fall to third but can still be delighted by a start comprising three wins and a draw.

Jackett said: 'It was better after the break and we did need to come back because otherwise the match was going to fall away from us. We lost here and at Bristol Rovers last season and now we’ve taken four points out of six on the road.'
