Pompey mourn 1950s and 60s striker
Tuesday, 28th Aug 2018 22:09 by pompey-fans.com staff

A former Pompey striker who also made a name for himself in the United States has passed away.

Ron Newman, who was 84, scored 25 goals in 116 Blues appearances during his six seasons with the club between 1956 and 1961.

Probably his best campaign was 1958-59 when he played 40 games and scored 7 goals.

A minute's applause will be held before Saturday's game with Plymouth.

Newman, born in Fareham, was, said Pompey, 'the kind of performer that was highly appreciated by the Fratton faithful, comfortable with either foot and willing to chase the ball for 90 minutes.'

A tribute on the club website said: 'In 1967 — and having also turned out for Fareham, Newport IW, Woking, Orient, Crystal Palace and Gillingham — Ron moved across the pond to become one of the pioneers of American soccer.

'He would return to Fratton Park as manager of the Dallas Tornado in 1970, later bringing another Stateside outfit to his former home when in charge of Fort Lauderdale.

'Newman became a naturalised US citizen in 1992, the same year he was inducted into the National Soccer Hall of Fame. Holder of coaching badges in both England and America, he was also a fully-qualified cricket and tennis coach.

'Everyone at Portsmouth Football Club would like to send their deepest condolences to Ron’s family and friends.'
