Blues believe, but promise they won't take Shrews lightly
Friday, 7th Sep 2018 21:47 by pompey-fans.com staff

Pompey have been at their best so far this season at Fratton Park - and they will need to be again when Shrewsbury visit.

The Blues have beaten Luton, Oxford and Plymouth at home in League One so far, scoring eight goals and letting in only one. But this latest test - against a side who pushed the top two all the way last seaon before missing out in the play-offs - could be the toughest yet.

The fact the Shrews have not won a league game yet this season is not getting Kenny Jackett thinking it will be straightforward.

He told the club website: 'We always hope to see a Pompey victory and our supporters are optimistic about us doing well. It’s not a pressure — I think it’s great. We’ve had a good start to the season and there’s belief around the place. But similarly we all know to look forward and not back.

'There have been games when we’ve battled well to get points, although we knew that wouldn’t always be enough. We’ve seen good signs of improvement and if we want to be contenders then we have to get better in all areas.

'The bar has to remain high — this is Portsmouth Football Club and our standards should be right up there.'

He said of Shrewsbury: 'Shrewsbury haven’t quite clicked yet after a fantastic season last time out. They’ve made a high amount of changes, but I do see a talented squad. I believe they’ll turn things around at some stage, so it’s up to us to maintain our own demanding standards.'

Jackett will be without Anton Walkes and Jack Whatmough this week - and probably next week at Peterborough as well - after they picked up injuries in the first half of the win over Plymouth. Ronan Curtis is away on international duty with Ireland U21s.

But Oli Hawkins, also a casualty against the Pilgrims, could be back in contention, with Brett Pitman standing by to start if he does not prove his fitness.
