Win at Scunthrope shows Pompey's progress perfectly

Kenny Jackett hailed his side for coming through a physical test to chalk up their eighth away league win of the season.

The 2-1 win at Scunthorpe, coupled with rivals slipping up, took Pompey's lead at the top of League One to four points ahead of Tuesday's home clash with Walsall.

Jackett told the club website: 'I thought we deserved the victory, although there were a succession of free-kicks after they got one back. Scunthorpe are a big team — probably the biggest side that we’ve played so far in this division. We knew the ball would be coming into our box.

'But we dealt with it very well in that particular period and if there’s any criticism, it’s that we didn’t get the third goal we perhaps needed at the start of the second half. In the end, though, I thought we produced a good offensive display and also a good defensive display.

'Oli Hawkins gave us a platform to play off and we were able to capitalise on that by scoring some goals. We looked a good side generally and you could see that our confidence is constantly growing going forwards.

'We came here 12 months ago and lost 2-0 to an established top six side, but we’ve made up the ground since then.'

It was Tom Naylor who gave Pompey a 34th minute lead by diverting the ball past the keeper after Jack Whatmough put a Ronan Curtis cross into the area.

Six minutes later Nathan Thompson set up Gareth Evans for a run into the box that ended with a clever finish that looped over the goalie.

Pompey wasted a couple of good chances for a third before Lee Novak drew the Iron back into it after Craig MacGillivray had been unable to hold on to it.

After that there was plenty of pressure from the home side but Pompey dug in superbly to preserve their lead.

Pompey: MacGillivray; N Thompson, Whatmough, Clarke, Brown; B Thompson, Naylor; Lowe (Wheeler 84), Evans (Burgess 79), Curtis; Hawkins. Subs not used: McGee, Walkes, Haunstrup, Close, Pitman.

Referee: Martin Coy

Attendance: 4,365 (913 Pompey fans)
