Jackett admits Pompey's late winner at Norwich might not have happened
Sunday, 6th Jan 2019 21:29 by pompey-fans.com staff

On a weekend when plenty of Premier League and Championship clubs went out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage, Pompyey's win at Norwich went largely under the radar.

And that's absolutely fine by the Blues and their fans - who seem quite happy with the efforts of a team many others in their division have dubbed as nothing special and who even some in the Norwich camp were unimpressed by.

If that's the best team in the League One... one Norwich observer said with not a little hint of sour grapes after seeing Andre Green produce his supersub act once again to see off the Canaries with a late, late winner - exactly as he'd disposed of Rochdale in the previous round.

Pompey could have been dead and buried by the time he netted - keeper Craig MacGillivray had had a busy evening up to that point and was many people's MoM. But Pompey played their part too, at times forcing pressure and chances of their own against the hosts' ten men - the home side having seen Grant Hanley rightly sent off for denying Ronan Curtis an early run through on goal.

Boss Kenny Jackett was understandably delighted with the win, Pompey's fourth in five games since mid-December. And he suggested the winning goal might not have come if he had got round to making another substitution, which he had been planning.

He told www.portsmouthfc.co.uk: 'I was just thinking about making my third substitution and getting Christian Burgess on because I knew the kitchen sink was coming at us. But it was only about 20 seconds and we didn’t even have time to do the change, which I was quite pleased about.

'It’s a competition we definitely want to progress in and to get through to the fourth round is something we can tuck away and look forward to. We’ll focus on the Checkatrade Trophy on Tuesday and predominantly our league games, but it’s exciting to be in the draw.

'It was a different test for us against a side flying in the Championship and they made a lot of changes, although have a very strong squad. The sending off was a key moment and I did think it was a red card because Ronan was in a position where I don’t think anyone would have caught him.

'We had chances in both halves and had spells when we were on top, although there were also times when our energy levels dropped and we allowed Norwich to build momentum. Green in the hole behind the front man was interesting and it’s his fifth goal for us after a tough start because of his injury. He looked lively when he came on.

'You saw what it meant with the scenes at the end, with many younger players who haven’t played against this standard of opposition and a terrific fan-base that really got behind us.'

The draw takes place on Monday evening as part of BBC1's coverage from the Wolves v Liverpool tie.
