Watch out Southend... here comes the Fratton Fringe
Monday, 7th Jan 2019 21:25 by pompey-fans.com staff

The Fratton Fringe will get its chance to shine at Southend on Tuesday.

Pompey boss Kenny Jackett plans to rest a number of his FA Cup heroes three days after their dramatic win at Norwich as he selects his team for the Checkatrade Trophy tie at Roots Hall.

Youngsters like Matt Casey, Adam May, Dan Smith and Brad Lethbridge may get a chance to start, while first team squad members who have spent more time on the bench than on the pitch lately, like Christian Burgess and Louis Dennis, may also expect to be involved.

Pompey have now reached the last 16 and while it's not a competition that's fired the imagination of the fans, it is one Jackett has enjoyed this season.

He told the Pompey website: 'It’s a competition that we’ve done very well in so far and it’s been interesting for me to look at some players who haven’t had much game-time. That will be the same again at Southend — we’ll change the team around. There will be a combination of those on the fringe and an opportunity for some young guys.

'We’ve used it very constructively so far and still got results, so we’ll be looking for both again if we can on Tuesday. It’s quite hard when you’re watching from the sidelines and wanting to get in, but this gives a decent chance for a different set of players.

'Southend are a very competitive League One team and will be working hard to get themselves up around the play-off places. We’ve got through to the knockout stages and if we can keep progressing on all fronts that would be great because there’s the carrot of a Wembley appearance at the end.

'But every win we’ve had in any competition this season has been hard-earned and we know it’s not going to get easier.'
