Could Checkatrade progress help Pompey's FA Cup and league ambitions?

Plenty of Pompey fans think the club's participation in the Checkatrade Trophy has no value - but could the confidence taken from another win in the competition and progress into the semi-finals help the Blues get over their recent blip in league form.

Midfielder Ben Close thinks so as Pompey reflect on their 1-0 quarter-final home win over Peterborough and warm up for two big games in four days- the FA Cup tie with QPR on Saturday and the League One second v first clash at Luton next Tuesday.

Close was in the Pompey side who overcame the Posh thans to a late David Wheeler goal and afterwards told the club website: 'I’ve never played at Wembley before, so that has to be the aim for us in this competition. You could see that the boys really wanted to get through to the next round and we want to go all the way.

'It was another great team performance against Peterborough that shows we are taking it really seriously. For me personally, it felt like a while since I’d been out there, so it was nice to play most of the game alongside Adam May.

'A few of the young lads came in and have played a few first team fixtures now — they’re more confident and not looking scared. I thought Matt Casey was excellent alongside Christian Burgess and the fact they kept a clean sheet shows how well he did.

'It was good to get the win after a couple of bad league results. It’s nice for the fans and helps our confidence, so we’re looking for more of the same on Saturday and next Tuesday.'
